Professor Bernie Carter
Professor of Children's Nursing Faculty of Health, Social Care and Medicine, Edge Hill University
Bernie is Professor of Children’s Nursing at Edge Hill University. When she was working clinically, Bernie worked as a Sister in children’s intensive care and in children’s high dependency care. Most of Bernie’s research focuses on children and young people whose lives are disrupted by pain, illness, disability, and complex health care needs. She is interested in finding out what is important to children, young people and their families so that changes can be made to improve their lives through better treatments and through making services child and family centred. She is particularly interested in the assessment of children’s pain and exploring the experiences of children growing up with a long-term condition. Bernie’s research is mostly participatory and qualitative. She ‘specialises’ in using innovative methods to engage children in research and she is passionate about using creating methods (e.g. animations) of sharing her research findings (see for example,
Communicating Lily’s Pain).
